History ...

The Gallon Pot was opened in 1772 as BURROUGHS WINE LODGE, and in 1886 had an address of 1 & 2 Market Place. The Lodge was noted in 1907 as the oldest licensed house in Gt. Yarmouth.

Taken over by Lacon & Co in 1897, although the house was listed as the property of Lacon & Co in 1824. By now the address also as 2 Market Place or Brewery Plain.

Known as BURROUGH'S WINE STORES to 7th May 1943 when the premises was destroyed by a bomb dropped by a FW190 during the Second World War. Rebuilt as the GALLON POT to open 12th February 1960.

Lacons was a local brewery based in Great Yarmouth, It has been four decades since the doors of Lacons brewery slammed shut - putting an end to 300 years of Great Yarmouth beer. The Lacons sign can still be seen clearly in the window of The Gallon Pot today.

The town is now back on the brewery map with Blackfriars Brewery which opened in 2005

The Market Place is at the heart of the shopping area but is also the hub for a wealth of heritage attractions including St Nicholas Church, probably the largest parish church in England. Built originally in the 1100's and then re-built in the 1950's following extensive damage caused by bombing during the Second World War.

The Market Place has been the site of a market for over 800 years. Birthplace of Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, stands almost next to St Nicholas Church. Across the road you'll find the restored Fishermen's Hospital, which was built in 1702 as almshouse for "decayed" fishermen who had fallen on hard times.

The last person to sign King Charles' death warrant as part of Oliver Cromwell's rebellion lived in the Market Place. Miles corbet was the town's MP, but after Cromwell's Commonwealth was quashed by Charles II, his life was in danger and he had to flee from Britain. Eventually, he was tracked down in Holland and brought to the Tower of London where he endured a tormented end.

Other historic figures associated with Great Yarmouth include, Charles Dickens, Horatio Lord Nelson.
